News Measurement on Sexual Merdeka Issue

“Sexual Merdeka” festival was banned by the police due to the organizer did not apply for a permit to hold the event and it was constituted a “threat to public order.”  Police have banned this festival with immediate action. This festival was scheduled by organizers, comprising of professional bodies. To analyse this issue, we have selected 3 different news media: The Star Online, Harakah Daily and Sin Chew Daily, to make comparison from 2nd to 8th November2011.

             The frequency of the related news published per day is counted base on the number of article as measurement. It indicates that Sin Chew Daily shows more concern on this issue compares with other media in this duration while The Star Online is more consistent on the update of the issue with publication every day in contrast with Harakah Daily with only 6 news.  
This Sexual Merdeka incident involved few key person, The Star Online and Sin Chew Daily include different aspect from every parties involve such as the Police, the founder of Sexual Merdeka, Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, Datuk Heng Seai Kie, PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi and Gay Pastor- Ouyang Wen Feng. On the other hand, Harakah Daily merely reported the news from the perspective of PAS Youth Malaysia and Police.
                In summary, we can conclude that The Star Online and Sin Chew Daily provide more objective news and standing in the neutral ground in this Sexual Merdeka issue. Both of them reporting news in adequate frequency to provide information that reader should know with further update. Furthermore, they covered mostly all parties perspective involved which allow reader to make the judgment by they own. Compare with Harakah Daily, in term of frequency in publication, Harakah Daily doesn't intend to put focus on this issue with less publication and holds prejudiced view covering the news with parties favor their perspective only.

  1. I'm glad that you guys analyze the news coverage in term of frequency, an approach that is not used by other students (in my tutorial groups). Merdeka Center does similar comparison report, too, on certain important topics.
