According to the Sin Chew Daily, Datuk Yeow Chin Kiong, the Public Service Department post-service division chief had brought up an issue about Malaysian civil servants’ incomes and benefits do not equivalent to their working performance. Yeow stated that the country has spent a huge amount of money in retirement benefits and pensions over the past ten years for 600,000 civil servants. He suggested that for those who are indiscipline or poor in performance, their benefits should be removed.
We all agreed with what Yeow said. However, people will not voice out if they do not get services they are expecting as a lot of people are afraid of getting themselves into trouble and they will only complain instead of fighting for their rights. Furthermore, this kind of services is already in our culture. It is hard for government officer to change their style of working by just voice of the citizens. According to The Malaysian Insider, Prime Minister Datuk Sri Najib Tun Razak claimed that he actually knew that the citizens are dissatisfied with the services and therefore he wanted to conduct a survey about it and hopefully service will get improvement.
In facts, the will of government to enhance the quality of civil servants’ performance had been shown. In year 2007, a Judge from High Court Kuantan had criticized the discipline and attitude of the officers by using the Malay word "Janji Siap" which means as long as it solved in English. The government is now generating a method to solve it. Although there are no follow-ups for the issue, however, by proposing this to the citizens, we believe that the public servants will definitely take to heart more to conduct their routines.
There is no longer the era of “what we see is what we get.” Public nowadays are being educated well. They know well about their rights and benefits that they should have as a citizen. Since our Government concern too about this issue, we can only wait and seek changes made from them. Hopefully sooner or later, citizen would be able to see the improvement in their performance.
