Seksualiti Merdeka -Comparison of The Star Online and Utusan Malaysia Online

The articles that chosen is the hot issue that recently banned by the political which is "Sexuality Merdeka" festival that held in Kuala Lumpur which highlight that Malaysian deserves to be free from discrimination, harassment and violence for their sexual orientations and their gender identities. Eventually, it has aroused alot of controversy. Two different newspaper has been choosen, The Star Online has strongly emphasize that with the headline of Seksualiti Merdeka not a 'free sex party', says Marina  (The Star Online, 2011) While, Utusan headline has label that Parti Keadilan Rakyat or PKR stand oppose to the festival- "PKR tidak sokong program Seksualiti Merdeka 2011" (Utusan Malaysia, 2011).

The similar view between The Star Online and Utusan Malaysia Online is emotional impact. For example, the "Mak Nyah" or transsexuals for male are one of the minorities, who face a lot of discrimination and some of them even get beaten up for being themselves” (The Star Online, 2011). It affects readers sympathize towards L-B-G-T or lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender communities, hence support the event. In the other way, Utusan Malaysia Online stated that the program was held since year 2008 but it has been fold up as they strengthen the rights of L-B-G-T  in Malaysia (Utusan Malaysia Online, 2011). Hence, readers disatisfied with the bias towards L-B-G-T.

According to The Star Online, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir denied that “Seksualiti Merdeka” is not a “free sex party” like what the media reported (The Star Online, 2011). It is unfair to them who just want to discuss human rights from the L-B-G-T and also spread the awareness.
However, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Presiden PKR Malaysia. clarified that PKR will not support this “seksualiti Merdeka” after they had meeting on this issue (Utusan Malaysia Online,2011)

The Star Online review the analysis of the report are all about the event from Marina’s and the people opinion that used  to summaries the whole event. They mostly emphasize on people’s opinion rather than facts.
While, Utusan news is direct lead the audience to the main point as what P-K-R and Anwar’s said. Some reader might felt offense as the news is just based on P-K-R’s opinion.

In conclusion, both the newspapers online are not reporting the content as the same but in different perspectives or opinions towards Seksualiti Merdeka.
