ABOLISHING PPSMI: Is It the Right Thing to Do?

A recent announcement by the Deputy Prime Minister to abolish the Teaching of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) has caused a stir among the public. The reason given was that the students in rural areas could not catch up with their city-dwelling counterparts and the teachers were said to be unfit to teach the subjects in English due to their lack of command in the language. So is the government’s decision to discontinue the policy the right thing to do?
English is a widely spoken language around the world, and the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English would certainly be helpful to the students who wish to pursue their studies overseas. Moreover in local universities, the medium used to teach the students is in fact in English. If they were learning in English before, it would definitely be much easier for them to grasp an understanding of the terms used and subjects taught.
For Malaysia to be a well developed nation, the government should start with the education of the younger generation. Teachers should be taught and trained properly to master both English and Bahasa Malaysia to ensure that our country will continue to progress. In this world today, the future generation should not have to abandon one form of knowledge for the sake of saving the other.
The government should actually be encouraging the younger generation to master new skills and languages so that they can help to develop the country. Our youths need to be empowered in as many ways as possible for the Vision 2020 dream to come true.
