The Star newspaper and NST online

News can be taken more seriously or not depending on how the news media portray it. We notice the big difference between News Strait Times (NST) online and Star newspapers.
For example in the case of the boy that got murdered in Indonesia the story was published
differently in the STAR papers as  the story has a multiple viewpoint of different party’s involved due to the murder whereas NST states only the mother’s viewpoint not the government.       To gain people to read ,the NST online uses  a more emotional approach and does not state much details yet makes you assume how bad the situation is. STAR shows more on the political side and how the both countries are trying to ensure Malaysian students safety.
The STAR chooses to use a more hard lead “Family Mourns scholar killed in E. Java.” Whereas NST uses a softer lead like “Mum recalls murdered son’s wish to help needy”. STAR paper is very direct but has more depth in the story as they cover all the loose ends but NST it keeps you hanging and wanting to know more about the story.
In conclusion, some news media are more pro- government and hence portray steps and measurements the government is taking and highlighting points that benefit the government, while some news media ignore those details. Different paper’s have different style, for example if Star publishes something it is always very direct and full of depth while NST is more laid back and makes even the more hard stories soft with catchy leads. Also the media they use to publish the news is also very important as it depends on how long the news should be and also what kind of crowd it caters to, like in The Star spaces are needed for pictures and advertisements.
The angle is very important as it depends on what and how you want to portray in your story

Abolishment of PPSMI in 2012

Abolishment of teaching Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) has brought up a lot of different viewpoints from many parties. Nonetheless, Ministry of Education had announced that abolition of PPSMI will be effective starting 2012. This announcement had made the headlines on Sin Chew Daily, Utusan Online and Malaysiakini. These news media used different ways in reporting the issue.

The tone that used by Sin Chew Daily and Malaysiakini in presenting their headlines are similar. Both of these media used unbiased way to create their headlines. They are not extreme and did not cause any misunderstanding toward the content. As compared to Utusan Online, its headline is more extreme and lack of focus to the actual meaning of the issue. It might attract more attention to the readers however it will also brings controversial debate among readers.

Besides, different news angle are being used by these media in elaborating the issue. Sin Chew Daily and Malaysiakini remained their neutral standpoint in reporting the happening of the issue. In contrast, Utusan Online set the agenda in a political way. They concluded the news with political issue and highlighted the part which they assumed is important to the public.

Utusan Online and Sin Chew Daily were using inverted pyramid news story structure where they arranged the news according to the degree of importance. Meanwhile, Malaysiakini used hourglass news story structure in presenting the news. It mentioned the most important part at top of the news and follow by describing the incident of the issue from beginning.

In conclusion, Sin Chew Daily and Malaysiakini are neutral in reporting news. They have a clear divide line on the topic of the issue. Utusan Online reported news bias to one side of the story. It also includes other irrelevant topic into the news articles.

How the nature of newspaper influence the Sexuality Merdeka issue

Sexuality Merdeka has been holding the festival annually since 2008, it is a movement that fights for an equal rights for the homosexual and transsexual had been banned by the government this year’s celebration which sparked a controversy.

Compare this news with Malay Mail, The Star had only report on the surface coverage of the sexuality merdeka banned and it is slightly more focused on press conference held by police. Malay Mail for its part tends to offer more on greater coverage to the movement, provide more perspective for the reader. But they are actually more alike than you would think and they do share a number of similarities.

One of the similarity is both of these newspaper contain police statement regarding on received many protests from non-governmental organizations, including Islamic and non-Islamic organizations, the police will take action to prevent any function relating to the program and police have identified and would call everyone involved to record their statements.

While there are a number of distinct differences between the two, along with the police statement, Malay Mail had interview the co-founder of the group and also the religious groups’ opinions. To get the participants’ reaction on the police ban, the Malays Mail visited the exhibition area at the Central Market Annexe which tell readers what happened next after the festival being banned. The Star only covered the police perspective.

Resulted showing the nature of newspaper will create distinct differences while cover the same press conference. The Star is a business newspaper, which makes it goes straight to the point in this issue. Malay Mail is ‘the paper that cares’, it concerns about people livelihood that make Malay Mail carried more content about this issue.

Worst Flood in Thailand

Thailand is in crisis when the worst floods in decades strike during the 2011 monsoon season. Comparisons of two news media regarding this issue are made between The Star newspaper and ntv7 news.

The television news and newspaper share similarity in providing facts and impacts about the victims. These media update the number of death and latest situation of the flood. Besides that, both media interview the authorities as their news sources. For instance, ntv7 News report news with sound bites of Thailand Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra while The Star news has quotes from her too.

Television news however leaves a greater emotional impact visually compare to newspaper. Ntv7 news not only has colourful visual images, but also sound bites and natural sound of ongoing flood scenes and the scenario of victims try to flee from Bangkok flood. On the contrary, The Star news provides readers with still images and words that seem less arouse emotion compare to ntv7 news. Moreover, ntv7 news show footages of Bangkok residents struggling with flood and victims crying over death which creates sympathy and evoke stronger emotion among audience.

In addition, television news is more current compare to fixed publication date of newspaper. For example, a breaking story of airport forced to shut down due to underwater flooding is broadcast in ntv7 edition news on 25th October 2011 but this news appear only in The Star on 26th October 2011.

In conclusion, coverage of both media is similar by reporting the facts of the flood that able to evoke emotion but television news creates a deeper impression with the combination of audio and visual. Hence, we think that the overall characteristics such as straightforward and create deeper inner feelings towards the audiences of television news make it better than newspaper.

Seksualiti Merdeka -Comparison of The Star Online and Utusan Malaysia Online

The articles that chosen is the hot issue that recently banned by the political which is "Sexuality Merdeka" festival that held in Kuala Lumpur which highlight that Malaysian deserves to be free from discrimination, harassment and violence for their sexual orientations and their gender identities. Eventually, it has aroused alot of controversy. Two different newspaper has been choosen, The Star Online has strongly emphasize that with the headline of Seksualiti Merdeka not a 'free sex party', says Marina  (The Star Online, 2011) While, Utusan headline has label that Parti Keadilan Rakyat or PKR stand oppose to the festival- "PKR tidak sokong program Seksualiti Merdeka 2011" (Utusan Malaysia, 2011).

The similar view between The Star Online and Utusan Malaysia Online is emotional impact. For example, the "Mak Nyah" or transsexuals for male are one of the minorities, who face a lot of discrimination and some of them even get beaten up for being themselves” (The Star Online, 2011). It affects readers sympathize towards L-B-G-T or lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender communities, hence support the event. In the other way, Utusan Malaysia Online stated that the program was held since year 2008 but it has been fold up as they strengthen the rights of L-B-G-T  in Malaysia (Utusan Malaysia Online, 2011). Hence, readers disatisfied with the bias towards L-B-G-T.

According to The Star Online, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir denied that “Seksualiti Merdeka” is not a “free sex party” like what the media reported (The Star Online, 2011). It is unfair to them who just want to discuss human rights from the L-B-G-T and also spread the awareness.
However, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Presiden PKR Malaysia. clarified that PKR will not support this “seksualiti Merdeka” after they had meeting on this issue (Utusan Malaysia Online,2011)

The Star Online review the analysis of the report are all about the event from Marina’s and the people opinion that used  to summaries the whole event. They mostly emphasize on people’s opinion rather than facts.
While, Utusan news is direct lead the audience to the main point as what P-K-R and Anwar’s said. Some reader might felt offense as the news is just based on P-K-R’s opinion.

In conclusion, both the newspapers online are not reporting the content as the same but in different perspectives or opinions towards Seksualiti Merdeka.

Seksualiti Merdeka! Maybe Not.

Seksualiti Merdeka 2011 has become the latest debate following the ban on the event which was supposed to be held to discuss human rights for the lesbian, bi-sexual, gay and transgender (LBGT) community.  The only similar significant can found from the 3 media is the event scheduled to be held from 9th to 13th November was banned by the police to safeguard public order.

The interviewee point-of-view from both media offer different view from authorities and politician. In Utusan Malaysia Online, the spokesman from government unit, Mr Faizal critics the free sex culture they advocated against the majority of the world's religions, especially Islam, Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism. Meanwhile from the China Press online, Datuk Hishamuddin say seksualiti merdeka is creating sensitive issue and its totally opposite with the Malaysia culture. For The Star Online, MCA president Datuk Chua says that it is people’s choice on choosing their sex preference as long it does not harm anyone.

The techniques representing their stand and writing style are different between all the articles from the three different media companies. We found that articles from Utusan Malaysia and China Press are against the Seksualiti Merdeka program while The Star shows their standpoint as neutral. This is because The Star uses phrases like “we neither support nor condemn “seksualiti merdeka” and “sexual preference is a very individual thing’” as well as publishing articles quoting opinions from interviewees.

As a conclusion, China Press online has better news organization in terms of arrangement and content of the news and leave a question for readers to think about the news. We prefer China Press online more than other 2 media, both The Star Online and Utusan Online to provide a better understanding for the readers.

PTPTN Might Retract Loans?

The recent news of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) planning to retract the loans for the expenses of university students have brought attention to many who are involved. However, it is said that the decision has not been finalized and will be reviewed by the government.

We have chosen 2 online newspapers – Sin Chew Daily and The Star Online, to compare the similarities and differences between the same news published in both newspapers’ website. The similarity in terms of media is that both are using online journalism, which means that both journalists and readers have more flexibility in terms of publishing and accessibility towards the articles as well as to be able to interact and to share the news with their friends and families through the “Share” function in Facebook.

For the news itself, we found that both of the news has use hard lead, informing the readers on facts related to the latest moves done by the government on PTPTN loans. They have also given impact and proximity effect, especially on the students who will be getting their loans next year and causing worries among the students who are under PTPTN loans now. The arrangements of the information on each news are using the inverted pyramid format, and the differences can be found in the complexity of the news. In The Star Online, it gives the readers a overall view on the government latest decision for PTPTN loans, while Sin Chew Daily has provide more information on what are the alternative ways to replace PTPTN loans and to ease the burdens on the students.

As a conclusion, different newspaper provides same news with differences. Therefore, it is good to read a variety of sources on particular news in order to obtain more information and try to view it from different point of view.

Railway train collided with a road fuel tanker causing 12 people injured.

A huge explosion occurred between a railway train and a road fuel tanker collided at Jalan Kepayan-Jalan Lintas junction near the Kota Kinabalu International Airport on 31 October 2011. 12 people were injured in this incident.

Similarities of all three sources (New Straits Times newspaper, The Star online news, and NTV7 7Edition) are, they provide attention grabbing headlines which the phrases are simple and direct. They are using hard lead, which wrote in subject-verb-object order.  The news impact on all sources is timeliness as they reporting the news immediately, and proximity which the case happens in Sabah. The six journalistic questions are briefly informed in the passage, while all three sources providing the same information thus accuracy can be seen.

For online news, it can creates higher emotional impact because the viewer are able to read the text , watch the visual and also able to get more information by clicking on the link provided on the webpage. For printed news, it creates lesser emotional impact because it only able to express the story through word and still images. Meanwhile, for TV news, viewer can view the news story with visual and audio.

In term of the complexity, the printed news has provided more details with different perspectives of the news story including victims, tank driver and Deputy Chief Minister. For online news, it also covers different type of perspectives which are Sabah Police Commissioner and Sabah Railways Director. Meanwhile, for TV news they only provided the summary of the accident.

Media nowadays are part our life. All the media are being molded according to the preference of different audience group. Including the style of reporting, the language used, the visual used and others. Yet, they are still able to update the audience with the current issue.

With the comparison we have done, it is obvious that each of the media are reporting on the same issue but again the style is different so that it can be adapt by the audience. In the end of the day, the final interpretation is still control by the audience. Media are only served as guidance for them to understand the news.

Bus express tragedy in highway, 25 injured

The chosen articles reported about 25 express bus passengers injured in a highway crash. Three sources selected were “The Malaysian Insider” online, “The Star Online” and “Sin Chew Jit Poh” online.

In all 3 articles, it was stated that three people including a Cambodian tourist were seriously injured while 22 others had minor injuries. The express bus they travelled in lost control and plunged into a drain. The police are questioning the 45-year old bus driver about his reckless driving.

“The Malaysian Insider” had the shortest news article and lesser details among the three. The reporting style is more like a summary rather than an article. The news reported was unclear and there wasn’t any picture attached. Hence the readers have to imagine the seriousness of the accident without any emotional impact on them. It also has a platform for readers to share and leave their comments about the article.

“The Star Online” reported more details compared to “The Malaysian Insider”. The victims’ encounter was described in details and the report style is generally from the victims’ point of view. An interview statement from the Johor Bharu (North) deputy OCPD Supt Mohd Akhir Ishak was attached to provide credibility. Pictures of the accident and the victims at the hospital were provided for a better view on the accident.

Whereas “Sin Chew Jit Poh” had the longest and detailed article compare to the others. The accident was reported in a very apparent manner where the reader knows every single details of the accident and it also guides the readers to picture how the tragedy happened. The article covered a wider perspective and angle where interviews covered almost all of the passengers and also the bus company. There were more pictures available illustrating the consequences of the impact. Words used were vivid and touches the reader’s heart.

As a conclusion, “Sin Chew Jit Poh” has better news organization in terms of arranging the way of reporting and having an emotional impact on the readers compared to “The Star Online” and “The Malaysian Insider”. Each corporation has its own way to disseminate the message to readers. One would prefer reading “Sin Chew Jit Poh” over “The Malaysian Insider” and “The Star Online” as the article is much more concrete and more details are provided for better understanding.
