Star online covered the function of the colonial railway where the accident happened and main cause of explosion as background story to the news. NST online however, only published an image with caption describing how bad the situation is. The government and authorities reflected different perspectives of the story in the two media. In Star Online, Sabah Railways Director, Mohd Zin is quoted as saying “This is worst mishap in our history”, indicating the huge impact of the explosion. The similarity is that both media offer multiple POVs from authorities and government. The Sabah Police Commissioner, Datuk Hamza was interviewed by both media and he explained about the consequences of the collision. In NST online, witnesses Busri Asad and Arshad said they saw passengers escaping from train windows before the explosion.
A difference in the sequence of story is found between the two online newspapers. NST Online began the story with an image, proceeding with the number of victims and then interviews. Meanwhile, Star Online started with the number of passengers followed by the cause of explosion. It also reported on the traffic and weather condition at that time.
A picture is used to stimulate the emotions of readers in NST Online while factual information in words only is focused in Star Online. The emotional factor is reduced in the absence of graphics for Star Online.
In conclusion, The Star online provided more in-depth coverage of the story compared to NST Online. It has a more organized flow of information with an addition of hyperlinks to related information.
