In the month of October, a two-years old girl(Yue yue) was ran over by two vehicles twice and ignored by 18 passer-by as she lay critically injured on the street of Foshan. This depressing news has ignited a huge humanity discourse among the public. Many different media reported on the incident in their respective viewpoint. We are going to look into their portrayal of humanity and ways of presentation.
Comparing the broadcast news and print news, their style of writing and way to cover Yue yue’s story is very much different. In 8tv Chinese news, the media shows entire process of how Yue yue was brutally ran over by the vehicles twice and number of passer-by on street was highlighted. The video is disturbing and emotional triggered. Without much effort of imagination, audience is able to witness the tragedy happened in front of their eyes. Information flooded into their mind unreservedly.
Other than that, a phone interview with one of the hit-and-run driver, soundbites of victim’s father was included in news package. These powerful news sources have enhance the reliability and trustworthiness of the news. With the help of visuals and audio, broadcast media is able to make the story more entertaining and easier to understand. Also, 8TV Chinese news did better job in term of timeliness. More updates on Yue yue’s condition are covered compare to print news.
Despite multimedia aspects in news reporting, print news serves an important role in the market as well. The Star newspaper reported Yue yue’s accident in a subtle way. The hit-and-run process was not described as detail as the broadcast media. Instead, they focus on the reason of passer-by’s ignorant behavior. The Star mentioned that morality is replaced by materialism due to economy boom in China. By bringing up the social issue, they are able to ignite the public awareness on importance of morality in our society. The Star newspaper is more concern on what audience should think about rather than to attack their emotion by showing them the violence death of Yue yue.
On the other hand, there are similarities between these two media as well. Both of the media reported the story content precisely and non-bias. They did not make judgment on any party involved and spaces are leave for audience to think.
In a nutshell, same piece of news but different perspective are used to report it. With different reporting ways, audience is able to look at the bigger picture and think differently without being spoon-fed by only a form of media.
