Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Science and Mathematics would continue to be taught in dual languages up to 2015, as the final batch of students in the PPSMI programme would have then completed their secondary education.
The government had studied each and every aspect of the new policy implementation into Malaysian Education system before making a decision to abolish the Learning of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) programme, which was implemented in phases from 2003. Although the government have consider each and every aspect but there are still certain parties who against the new implementation.
Firstly, parents against the abolishment because they are worried with the stress their children have to go through as the education ministry keep changing the language of teaching science and mathematics, the students unable to catch up with the changing of the syllabus of both subjects. Due to this teaching system, students not only having difficulty time in catching up with their studies but they are also having harsh time on adapting the changes throughout the learning period. Therefore, parents decided to against the abolishment of PPSMI programme.
Besides that, the government should continue to avoid any wastage of money to produce new books in Bahasa Malaysia as the both subjects were in English since 2003. Furthermore, the government shouldn’t waste time on revise certain scientific terms from English to Bahasa Malaysia because the sources for converting the terms are limited in Bahasa Malaysia. Government could save money and time by reconsidering the abolishment of PPSMI programme.
English has become an important language in this fast pace moving information society, to ensure that young Malaysians can catch up with this fast pace moving information they should be proficient in English. Therefore, the government should re-evaluate about the abolishment of PPSMI programme for the future of young Malaysian.
