China to lift import ban on Malaysian bird’s nest products after recognizing the existence of natural nitrite in bird nests after Malaysia bird nests were banned from China due to the excessive level of nitrite detected on July 2011. With that, we have selected articles from both the Star Online and News Straits Times which report about this story to do the comparison on news coverage.
In terms of the similarity, both articles do not provide background information as the origin of this event was not explained. Through both articles, the story tells about the ban being lifted but the event which caused the ban was not explained, thus readers might not fully understand the story because of the unknown reason of the ban. However, the story did fit into a bigger picture as it does not mainly circle about the government decision and efforts for the nitrite content in the bird nests but it also discuss about the opportunity of the local exporters being revived after the ban lifted which will be beneficial for the country’s economy. The statement made by the Datuk Paduka Beh Heng Seong regarding local exporters adhering to the standards as well as the potential profit made after the ban is lifted signify same angle both articles has shared for this story.
Both articles also share the similarity for the sequence of information as details mainly consist of explanation of the incident and the solution followed by the discussion on Malaysia’s bird nest exporting prospects caused by the event. Both articles did not arouse any emotional impact, as both reported the incident and the facts relating to the event alone without any pictures attached.
As for differences, the Star Online emphasizes more on explaining the details of the solution done by both parties in standardizing the nitrite level of bird nest which aims to give an explanation to the public and gaining back the confidence of public. On the contrary, New Straits Times seems to prefer a more direct yet concise approach of reporting as brief information regarding the steps taken by the governments is mentioned without reporting on the details such as scheduling which the Star Online did. However, News Straits Times did mentioned about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s discussion with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on 21 October regarding the temporary ban which reflects his concern towards the event while the Star Online does not.
In sum, the Star Online is more informatively in depth than News Straits Times.
