AN EAR FOR THE PARENTS ON PPSMI

It’s been 8 years since 2003 that Science and Mathematics are teaching in English (PPSMI). However, Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had announced another new education policy on July 8, 2009 to replace PPSMI which was known to “Uphold the Malay Language and Strengthening the Command of English”.

As expected, this had triggered dissatisfaction among parents. The rapid changes in education policy can easily confused and increase tension to the students. There are few cases where students are fear to face the changes which caused them suffering from depression. Shouldn’t the authorities step into the shoes of the minority instead of considering the benefit for most of the students?

According to a nationwide research by Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (PAGE) in a memorandum to Prime Minister, result shows that 79% of students and 55% of parents in rural areas wish PPSMI could be retained. Another research also shows that among 54% of the respondents, 70% of the Malays prefer to have PPSMI retained. All these research reflects on the need of Malaysian to have PPSMI, yet the authorities chose not to consider in fulfilling their needs?

Furthermore, many scientific and technologies terms in Bahasa Malaysia are actually originated from English. It is rather easier to direct learn the language than through translation. The industry sectors are also using English term in their job communication. The abolishment of PPSMI will only lower the competitiveness of the kids to the rest of the world.

PAGE is now threatening to have their voice be heard before the next election comes. Parents should also consider and think twice for the future of their children. What you have changed today is for a better tomorrow.

  1. I like your PAGE statistics. If you guys manage to include latest update (i.e. students are allowed to choose language), it would be even better! :)

    cheers,
