Abolishment of PPSMI in 2012

          Abolishment of teaching Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) has brought up a lot of different viewpoints from many parties. Nonetheless, Ministry of Education had announced that abolition of PPSMI will be effective starting 2012. This announcement had made the headlines on Sin Chew Daily, Utusan Online and Malaysiakini. These news media used different ways in reporting the issue.

          The tone that used by Sin Chew Daily and Malaysiakini in presenting their headlines are similar. Both of these media used unbiased way to create their headlines. They are not extreme and did not cause any misunderstanding toward the content. As compared to Utusan Online, its headline is more extreme and lack of focus to the actual meaning of the issue. It might attract more attention to the readers however it will also brings controversial debate among readers.

          Besides, different news angle are being used by these media in elaborating the issue. Sin Chew Daily and Malaysiakini remained their neutral standpoint in reporting the happening of the issue. In contrast, Utusan Online set the agenda in a political way. They concluded the news with political issue and highlighted the part which they assumed is important to the public.

          Utusan Online and Sin Chew Daily were using inverted pyramid news story structure where they arranged the news according to the degree of importance. Meanwhile, Malaysiakini used hourglass news story structure in presenting the news. It mentioned the most important part at top of the news and follow by describing the incident of the issue from beginning.

          In conclusion, Sin Chew Daily and Malaysiakini are neutral in reporting news. They have a clear divide line on the topic of the issue. Utusan Online reported news bias to one side of the story. It also includes other irrelevant topic into the news articles.
