It's Time To Think

“Why do we have to feel so scared and threatened in our own home land?”

“ I only wish for a peaceful petition, but why no one is willing to listen?”

These words were from her mouth. Wearing yellow clothes, holding a bunch of chrysanthemum,  she is Aunty Anne, known as Lady of Liberty by many, a 65-year-old retired English teacher who had dared to march with Bersih 2.0 rally in hope that the government will be able to change and have a free & fair elections.
On that particular day, Aunty Anne, from Setapak had took a bus ride ALONE down to KL, where the rally occurred. Yet, she was stop 4 times for questioning by the police, asking her why she is wearing yellow. She reply, “Why can’t I wear yellow?”. Without any information regarding the time and location of the rally, with faith, she continues walking towards the city area. As the rally starts, the chaos begins when police tries to stop the rally with tear gas and water cannon, although suffering from the effects of it, Aunty Anne still continues to walk.

Aunty Anne’s action has made us think, if a 65 year old lady dares to speak up, why not with others? What we should really consider, is the meaning behind all the protest and her bravery to express herself. As Malaysia citizens, we have the right to request the government to improve their system, but unfortunately, most of the people has taken no actions because they think that things will not improve even if they speak up or worst, being taken in by the police. But yet, listen to what Aunty Anne has to say, “Why do we have to feel so scared in our own homeland and by own countryman?”

It’s time to think.
