The overcrowding at the Immigration Office

Overcrowding at the Jabatan Immigration in Puchong Utama has been a common sight since the counters started operating in February. Selangor Community Policing group coordinator Kuan Chee Heng suggested that the Immigration Office should be moved to a bigger venue.

“It will be a really good idea to move to another venue as there are only 80 seats inside and many people have to stand while waiting for their turn, or wait in the restaurant next door. The place gets noisy and very congested thus causing an inconvenience to both the public and immigration officers,” said Kuan.

Many people prefer to apply or renew their passports at the Puchong office as most of them are from the area or the nearby townships. Although this office is crowded, the public would rather bare the wait than travel to the Putrajaya branch.

Some members of the public get impatient and vent their anger at the officers on duty. Since there are limited counters at the Immigration Office, the officers are slow to respond. This is an area that needs to be improved on and the completion of tasks should be more efficient.

It also helps if the officers practice service with a smile and are polite and conscientious towards the applicants.

Saujana Puchong Residents Association chairman Martin Lim suggested passports could be applied online in order to save time. As this option may be far from implementation, the immigration department should look into installing extra computers in the office and hire more officers to assist in passport applications and renewal online.

It will be a faster and more efficient way to solve the overcrowding problem. Meanwhile the public should learn how to apply or renew passports via the Immigration’s Online portal to save time and prevent unnecessary complications.

At last, the party involved should take the appropriate and suitable action as soon as possible to avoid the problem from getting worse.
