‎11% increment of UTAR bus fare

PETALING JAYA: Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) will increase the bus fare starting on 1st January 2012 which will costs RM0.80.

Datuk Dr. Engineering Chua Hean Teik, President of University of Tunku Abdul Rahman mentioned that such increment was made by the institute after the board of committees have agreed to increase 11% from the previous price, which is RM0.70.
. He explained that the institute could not absorb previous cost further after the hiking of diesel price by 66.5% which is from RM 1.08 to RM 1.80 per litre.

The university stated that the fare adjustment is just as UTAR has never increased the bus fare since it started its service back in 2005. However, the president also declared that the new fare will not affect the number of trips per day.

Immediate response was made by UTAR students said that UTAR can follow other universities by providing shuttle bus service as current practice could burden them.

There are quite a few other private universities around that provide free shuttle bus service to their students. Keeping in view of this fact, the institute can come up with a similar concept of logistics.

UTAR should make consideration on students first before making any changes. Quite a large number of students derive from middle class families, and that they rely heavily on UTAR bus services, therefore the new bus fare might be a burden for the students.

Share Life, Give Blood

UTAR, PETALING JAYA:  A blood donation campaign organised by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) was held on the 19th and the 21st of October 2011 at the PD BLOCK (PD 011) of UTAR’s Petaling Jaya campus. It was open to all staffs and students of the campus.

The campaign is held at the beginning of the every new semester each year. It is also incorporated into the orientation program of both January and May intakes for the freshmen. This is to get them involved with activities around UTAR and also for them to do an altruistic deed.

This blood donation campaign themed “Share Life, Give Blood” drew about 67 students, mostly from Foundation level. Everyone was eager to help and those that had not reached the stipulated age of 18 years old had to get written permission from their parents.

At first, some of the students were quite hesitant about donating blood; however the volunteers and the nurses from University Malaya cleared their doubts and eased their minds. Each donor's weight and haemoglobin level was checked before the donation of blood and refreshments were also provided for the donors. Moreover, each of them did not go back empty handed but received goodie bags from the organisers.

We hope that our university continues to organise blood donation campaigns as it helps us give back to our community. Moreover,
students could get involved and recognize the need for donating blood. It will also encourage them to become regular, voluntary blood donors in the future.

Rockaway Festival 2011

Despite the cancellation of two very well-known international artistes, namely Sum 41 and Dashboard Confessionals, Rockaway Festival 2011 still managed to rock the neighborhood with the signing of the internationally popular bands The Used, All Time Low and Story of the Year. Following the huge success it was last year, Rockaway Festival 2011 continues its tradition of being the only and largest rock act in Malaysia that lasts 12 hours nonstop featuring international and local acts on the same stage.  This year over 7000 people came to rock at the Carpark A of the Bukit Jalil Stadium on the 8th of October. Some came as early as 9.00 am as the event starts from 12.00 noon to 12.00 midnight with tickets being priced at a very affordable RM 88.

One day before the big event, The Used appeared for a press conference meeting held at The Palace of the Golden Horses to shed some light and create hype on the event. After the dust and flash photography had settled in, it was time to rock!

Over 15 local acts took stage, namely Deja Voodoo Spells, Hujan, Kyoto Protocol, Metalasia, Pop Shuvit, Love Me Butch and many more as the crowd was whipped into a frenzy with their showmanship and musical prowess. The main highlights, however, were the international acts, The Used, All Time Low and Story of the Year. All Time Low had girls throwing their undergarments on stage, The Used got the crowd head banging and Story of the Year oozed charisma and energy throughout their performance.

Overall, Rockaway Festival 2011 was a great music festival that promoted the local Malaysian music scene that was reinforced by great international acts. Rockaway Festival 2011 One Buck Short & Friends, together with Livescape Asia. Bring on Rockaway Festival 2012 please!

Where is The Promise of Our Cheaper Food ???

Our reporter had conducted an on-ground survey by six selected restaurants around Old Klang Road, which had been listed in The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry official website. However, among the six selected restaurants, there were only one restaurant which practiced the MR1M program. The remaining restaurants were not aware of the 1Malaysia campaign although their shop was listed in the MR1M program.

The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry has implemented the project of MR1M (Menu Rakyat 1 Malaysia) in July 7,2011. This program promised the nation to get their meal with cheapest price as low as RM2 and maximum RM4, which menu selections differ from the participated restaurant itself. Currently there are 952 restaurants in the nation took part in this program.

Change but No Improvement (Rothman Roundabout)

PETALING JAYA- The conversion of Rothman roundabout to traffic light junctions has finally reached its completion stage a month after the proposed date. However, these nine-months of transformation work which cost RM4.2 million showed no improvements in reducing the traffic congestion during peak hours at the busy junctions that connects to SS2 and Section 19 of Petaling Jaya.
According to Petaling Jaya Traffic Police Chief DSP Wong Siw Chooh, traffic lights do not differ much compared to roundabouts. It does not help to reduce the traffic flow as every driver has to wait for at least 3 minutes to move along the roads. Eventually, more cars are queuing at every traffic light junctions and extend the waiting time.
DSP Wong also believes that converting the roads to a one-way flow is the best way to reduce congestion as motorists are then forced to detour, thus reducing the traffic flow at that area.
This first phase of the project which includes the addition of a lane to Jalan harapan, Jalan 19/8, Jalan 19/1 and Jalan Universiti leading to the roundabout has affected people from all walks of life as residential areas, companies, factories and also education centres are highly concentrated at this point. Students and working adults can be seen leaving the area hurriedly to avoid the jam during the rush hours.
Upgrading work which links Jalan Harapan to Sprint Highway is expected to begin March next year. This second phase is expected to cost RM5.3 million and would further ease the congestion at Rothman.
