Share Life, Give Blood

UTAR, PETALING JAYA:  A blood donation campaign organised by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) was held on the 19th and the 21st of October 2011 at the PD BLOCK (PD 011) of UTAR’s Petaling Jaya campus. It was open to all staffs and students of the campus.

The campaign is held at the beginning of the every new semester each year. It is also incorporated into the orientation program of both January and May intakes for the freshmen. This is to get them involved with activities around UTAR and also for them to do an altruistic deed.

This blood donation campaign themed “Share Life, Give Blood” drew about 67 students, mostly from Foundation level. Everyone was eager to help and those that had not reached the stipulated age of 18 years old had to get written permission from their parents.

At first, some of the students were quite hesitant about donating blood; however the volunteers and the nurses from University Malaya cleared their doubts and eased their minds. Each donor's weight and haemoglobin level was checked before the donation of blood and refreshments were also provided for the donors. Moreover, each of them did not go back empty handed but received goodie bags from the organisers.

We hope that our university continues to organise blood donation campaigns as it helps us give back to our community. Moreover,
students could get involved and recognize the need for donating blood. It will also encourage them to become regular, voluntary blood donors in the future.
