PETALING JAYA: Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) will increase the bus fare starting on 1st January 2012 which will costs RM0.80.
Datuk Dr. Engineering Chua Hean Teik, President of University of Tunku Abdul Rahman mentioned that such increment was made by the institute after the board of committees have agreed to increase 11% from the previous price, which is RM0.70. . He explained that the institute could not absorb previous cost further after the hiking of diesel price by 66.5% which is from RM 1.08 to RM 1.80 per litre.
The university stated that the fare adjustment is just as UTAR has never increased the bus fare since it started its service back in 2005. However, the president also declared that the new fare will not affect the number of trips per day.
Immediate response was made by UTAR students said that UTAR can follow other universities by providing shuttle bus service as current practice could burden them.
There are quite a few other private universities around that provide free shuttle bus service to their students. Keeping in view of this fact, the institute can come up with a similar concept of logistics.
UTAR should make consideration on students first before making any changes. Quite a large number of students derive from middle class families, and that they rely heavily on UTAR bus services, therefore the new bus fare might be a burden for the students.
