Malaysian medical student, Adrian Jay Pereira was killed in Indonesia this Monday, 7th November 2011. Regarding to this incident, we would like to discuss the similarities and differences of articles from online media, TheStar and ntv7news.
The chosen articles entitle “Malaysian medical student in Indonesia killed by robber” from TheStar and “Slained Malaysian student: Adrian’s body to be flown home tomorrow” from ntv7news. From the headline, we could clearly notice that both articles are reporting in different perspective. The Star emphasize on the causality of Adrian’s death while ntv7news emphasize on the Adrian’s body, action taken after the murdered case. So, both articles present the news in different information sequence. Ntv7news tend to begin with action taken by Education Malaysia in Indonesia and follow by the incident happen to victim whereas TheStar report in vice versa way.
Both media cover same news source, Ludinata Misnun, Education Malaysia attache at the Malaysian Embassy in Indonesia, in order to gain the information about the date of Adrian’s body sending back to Malaysia. If compare to TheStar, ntv7news cover more information because the article include Adrian’s ambition which spoken by his mother.
Apart from that, both media are using different technique on reporting the news. TheStar used informative text and facts such as “…reports provided by the National Malaysian Student Association in Indonesia (PKMI), the victim was Adrian Jay Pereira, from Klang, Selangor…” whereas ntv7news use short sentences and video clips to deliver the news. The video clip included voice over of Ludinata Misnun reporting on the arrangement of Adrian’s body which it is very important to Malaysian especially victim’s family.
In conclusion, news article from ntv7news is better than TheStar because it is more convincing especially with video clip as people believe on what they have seen and heard.
