News can be taken more seriously or not depending on how the news media portray it. We notice the big difference between News Strait Times (NST) online and Star newspapers. For example in the case of the boy that got murdered in Indonesia the story was published differently in the STAR papers as the story has a multiple viewpoint of different party’s involved due to the murder whereas NST states only the mother’s viewpoint not the government. To gain people to read ,the NST online uses a more emotional approach and does not state much details yet makes you assume how bad the situation is. STAR shows more on the political side and how the both countries are trying to ensure Malaysian students safety. The STAR chooses to use a more hard lead “Family Mourns scholar killed in E. Java.” Whereas NST uses a softer lead like “Mum recalls murdered son’s wish to help needy”. STAR paper is very direct but has more depth in the story as they cover all the loose ends but NST it keeps you hanging and wanting to know more about the story.
In conclusion, some news media are more pro- government and hence portray steps and measurements the government is taking and highlighting points that benefit the government, while some news media ignore those details. Different paper’s have different style, for example if Star publishes something it is always very direct and full of depth while NST is more laid back and makes even the more hard stories soft with catchy leads. Also the media they use to publish the news is also very important as it depends on how long the news should be and also what kind of crowd it caters to, like in The Star spaces are needed for pictures and advertisements. The angle is very important as it depends on what and how you want to portray in your story.
