Why Women?

The local media are seen reporting various crime cases daily which shares a common link among them all, women.  Women safety is still a worrying issue in our nation. A question then arises as to why are women often the target of such cases? Where does the root cause lies? Is it amongst the women themselves, or are there any other pressing factors?

The First Lady, Datin Rosmah Mansor said, factors such as ineffective community policing, inadequate street lighting and unsafe underpasses contributed to these crime incidents.

Nowadays, media content in dramas, movies, advertisements and so on are powerful in influencing the public’s mindset. In our opinion, media realm indirectly portraying women as crime victim is the main factor leads to crime cases. Public may bias towards women as weak subject due to high exposure of negative media messages. Today, local community highlights safety issue on women from being victimize, but the existence of certain inappropriate media content is in contrast with the objective in protecting women. Instead, media as an influential medium should play the role to eliminate bias perception against women among public.

In conclusion, media, related authority and government have the role in minimized crime cases among women. Yet, women should aware of their own safety and it is also the responsibility of their loved one including us to create a harmonious living environment.
