Political Social Media

Social media network has become the latest trend for the public to communicate, express their feelings and thoughts and stay in touch with each other. So likewise do the politicians who take the initiative to use it as a platform to spread their agenda and political views.

Most politicians use social network like Facebook, Twitter and You Tube to get the public’s attention on the latest happening in the government and political scene.  The younger generation are avid users of social media and studies have shown that Malaysians spent at least nine hours a week on social networking sites compared to other nationals worldwide. So to enable their views and comments to be accessible to these young generations, the politicians have to get socially connected to them. The best way for them is to post their views and share information online. They constantly update their social network.

This new media to spread the influence of making the younger voters more involved in political issues may also result in misuse and negative side effects.  Recently one member of a political party was summoned by the disciplinary committee for a twitter message.  Some of the postings may also contain bad and misleading information or which may give rise to discontent.

The following picture is taken from a facebook page. This picture show that how the politicians illustrate the recent topic with politicians face. Plus, the facebook users respond are very high to it.

What we hoped for is for the politicians and the internet users to be very responsible and be within the law when using the social media to achieve their political goals. What they post online should not have any racial or religious insensitivity which will result in undesirable happenings and hatred.
