answer to the abolition of the PPSMI policy (Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran
Sains dan Matematik dalam Bahasa Inggeris). The statement posted on 13th October 2011 at Facebook pages of Prime Minister, Datuk Sri Najib and Education Minister Tan Seri Muhyiddin Yassin, has since been getting its momentum.
The PPSMI policy, introduced in 2003 by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad was aimed at elevating the country’s global competitiveness. However, due to declining academic performance of students’, the government has finally decided to end the program in 2012.
The government’s conclusive decision has in fact taken scarce consideration of The Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (PAGE) and various other groups which firmly objects the reversion. Also, it is evident that the abolition of PPSMI policy would
lead to further complications as students move to tertiary education where
classes are conducted in English.
The government has indirectly chosen not to confront the evident language struggle in the country. The reversion of the teachings back to Bahasa Malaysia, offers no solution to tackling the root problem of incompetency among students’ and teachers’. English language, as the identified weak link of the nation to global competitiveness, is a matter to be emphasized by means of improvement. The act of pulling out in haste will hinder Malaysia’s further advancement to international levels.
The government is knowingly walking backwards in the progress of nation
development. They are contradicting their own claim to strengthen teaching
and learning in English while leaving vital subjects like Maths and
Science out of the equation.
