Worst Flood in Thailand

Thailand is in crisis when the worst floods in decades strike during the 2011 monsoon season. Comparisons of two news media regarding this issue are made between The Star newspaper and ntv7 news.

The television news and newspaper share similarity in providing facts and impacts about the victims. These media update the number of death and latest situation of the flood. Besides that, both media interview the authorities as their news sources. For instance, ntv7 News report news with sound bites of Thailand Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra while The Star news has quotes from her too.

Television news however leaves a greater emotional impact visually compare to newspaper. Ntv7 news not only has colourful visual images, but also sound bites and natural sound of ongoing flood scenes and the scenario of victims try to flee from Bangkok flood. On the contrary, The Star news provides readers with still images and words that seem less arouse emotion compare to ntv7 news. Moreover, ntv7 news show footages of Bangkok residents struggling with flood and victims crying over death which creates sympathy and evoke stronger emotion among audience.

In addition, television news is more current compare to fixed publication date of newspaper. For example, a breaking story of airport forced to shut down due to underwater flooding is broadcast in ntv7 edition news on 25th October 2011 but this news appear only in The Star on 26th October 2011.

In conclusion, coverage of both media is similar by reporting the facts of the flood that able to evoke emotion but television news creates a deeper impression with the combination of audio and visual. Hence, we think that the overall characteristics such as straightforward and create deeper inner feelings towards the audiences of television news make it better than newspaper.
