Govt Decision A Huge Disappointment

Around end of October and early November this, the main headlines on every newspaper was Education Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassins decision to end the teaching of Science and Maths in English(PPSMI) IN schools nationwide and confirmed the decision as Final.

IT brings great disheartenment to all of us learning that the Government has put a lid on calls to teach Science and Maths in English.  The Education Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, on an official visit to Singapore, sang praises about the vocational and technical education system in Singapore.  Did he fail to realize that as a whole, parents in Malaysia are green with envy of the good education system in Singapore?  Based on the standards, its not just the vocational educational alone that’s worth emulating.  The schools there are well funded and the teachers are very highly qualified thus making them more motivated to teach resulting in the high standard of teaching in Singapore.

But more importantly, they teach in English. Believe it or not, The National University of Singapore (NUS) ranks consistently as one of 30 top universities in the world unlike University Malaya which struggles to even stay within the top 200 despite numerous attempts of revival. Despite all this proven and factual stats, The Deputy Prime Minister and Educational Minister still stands firm saying that the policy has been decided and should be respected,”DPM: It will be chaotic”(Sunday Star, Oct 30). It is shocking even to learn that having a dual language system would be “Chaotic”. We believe this is just indeed an excuse as if the decision remains, then certainly it’s going to be difficult for the ministry in getting quality English teachers thus leading us moving backwards in the development of the future generation who will not be proficient in the English Language.

There were also many questions asked about how hypocritical our ministers and senior politicians without shame mentioning that their kids are studying in international schools instead of national school. Why the need to study in international school? Is it not because they can learn in English? Why is the future of their children more important the others in the nation? We really do hope that the Education Minister can rethink the decision again for the future of other people’s children and the educational standard of the country by not back tracking on the policy of teaching Science and Maths in English.
